Keeping in view of the changes in trade & commercial practices and globalisation of trade, India's trademark law has been amended by the Parliament. The Government of India has passed and repealed the earlier Trade and Merchandise Marks Act 1958 by passing Trademarks Act 1999. This Act is compatible with TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) harmonising the Indian Trademarks Law with international systems and practices.
