Keeping in line with the international trend of helping financial institutions recover their bad debts quickly and efficiently, Government of India enacted the Recovery of Debts Due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act 1993.

It constitutes of special courts called the Debts Recovery Tribunals and Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunals across the country. These Debt Recovery Tribunals were unshackled from rigorous and cumbersome procedures that were prescribed under the Civil Procedure Code.

Instead, the Debt Recovery Tribunals are now empowered to frame their own procedures of practice.
